Newcastle’s Isak grabs late winner at Forest
Newcastle’s Alexander Isaac kept his hopes of a top-four finish firmly on the line as he scored a dramatic injury-time winner from the penalty spot at Nottingham Forest.
Isak, who canceled out Emmanuel Dennis’ opening goal in the first half, calmly placed a spot kick into the right corner after Musa Niakete was penalized for a handball in the box.
In an eventful match, Newcastle substitute Elliott Anderson thought he was making it 2-1 when he headed in the back post, but was ruled out by VAR for build-up offside.
Newcastle came out on top with a big spell, hitting the crossbar twice in the first half. It was both sides of a brilliant chance Joe Willock threw at close range.
Forest’s first goal defied the flow of play when Newcastle defender Sven Botman unforgivably gave possession to Denis.
The pressure of the visitors finally paid off when Willock set up Isak for an accurate volley into the far corner on the stroke of half-time, the Swedish striker later to spark a celebration at Nottingham’s away end. delivered a winner.
The result leaves Newcastle in fifth place, just one point behind Tottenham, with one game to go, while Forest are two points above the relegation zone.
Forest continuation rewards Newcastle efforts
Newcastle were forced to work hard to win, and they deserved it.
Already in the second half, Forest goalkeeper Keylor Navas was put to good use and the pressure increased in the opposition’s half, with defender Serge Aurier scoring a goal-line clearance and striker Jacob Murphy hitting a wide volley from close range.
Luck seemed to be on Forrest’s side when Anderson’s goal was ruled out for offside in the build-up.
It was Newcastle’s first come-from-behind victory in the Premier League this season, reinforcing their challenge for Champions League spots.
He also scored against Wolves last weekend, an impressive performance from Isak, who has scored six goals in 10 Premier League appearances.
Traveling supporters remained crammed into the stands after the final whistle blew, congratulating the players on the pitch and celebrating a success that could have turned out to be important.
For Forrest, this was another disappointing result. Relegation threats remained and they could not face Newcastle on Friday night.
They had second-half chances through Brennan Johnson in the final minutes, but couldn’t bother goalkeeper Nick Pope enough.
